Introduction Tibetan Stupa
Before the advent of Buddhism, great teachers were often interred in earthen mounds. Some were cremated, while others were buried in a seated, meditative posture, concealed within these mounds. This practice influenced the stupa's distinctive domed shape, which symbolizes a person seated in meditation, reminiscent of the Buddha's posture when he attained Enlightenment and comprehended the Four Noble Truths. The base of the stupa represents his crossed legs in a contemplative position, while the central mound signifies the Buddha's body. The pinnacle of the mound, featuring a rising pole encircled by a small fence, symbolizes his head. Before the creation of figurative representations of the Buddha, practitioners often expressed their devotion through stupa-focused reliefs, highlighting the spiritual and symbolic importance of the stupa in early Buddhist practice.
