Who is Maitreya Buddha?

Maitreya Buddha, known as the future Buddha, holds a central place in both Theravāda and Mahāyāna Buddhist traditions. The concept of Maitreya originates from early Indian Buddhism, where he is described in canonical texts such as the Anāgatavamsa (Chronicle of the Future Buddha) and the Mahāyāna Mahāsannipāta Sūtra. According to these teachings, Maitreya is currently dwelling in the Tushita Heaven, a celestial realm reserved for bodhisattvas awaiting rebirth to complete their enlightenment.

Maitreya is prophesied to appear on Earth when the teachings of the historical Buddha, Shakyamuni, have completely disappeared. At that time, he will be born as a human, attain full enlightenment, and teach the Dharma anew to guide sentient beings out of suffering. This prophecy has been a source of hope and inspiration throughout Buddhist history, especially during times of social or spiritual decline.

In ancient India and Central Asia, devotion to Maitreya was widespread, and by the 4th century CE, statues of Maitreya began to appear in Gandhara and Mathura art. He is typically portrayed as a princely figure adorned in ornaments or seated upright on a throne with his feet resting on the ground, indicating his readiness to descend to Earth. Temples and monuments dedicated to Maitreya have been built across Tibet, China, Nepal, and Mongolia, reflecting his enduring spiritual importance. The belief in Maitreya has also influenced Buddhist-inspired millenarian movements throughout history, where followers await his arrival as a bringer of a new era of peace and the Dharma.
