Siddhartha Gautama, born around 563 BCE in modern-day Nepal, was a prince of the Shakya clan. Despite his life of privilege, he was deeply moved by the suffering he saw outside the palace. Embracing the Middle Way, he meditated under the Bodhi tree in Bodh Gaya, where he attained enlightenment and became the Buddha, the "Awakened One."
