Samantabhadra: The Primordial Buddha
In Mahayana and Vajrayana Buddhism, Samantabhadra, whose name means "Universal Worthy" or "All Good," is a highly esteemed Bodhisattva who personifies the qualities of wisdom and compassion. Known as Fugen Bodhisattva in Japanese Buddhism and Puxian in Chinese Buddhism, Samantabhadra represents the practice and meditation aspects of the Buddha's teachings.
To symbolize his noble traits and the depth of his compassion, Samantabhadra is frequently depicted riding a white elephant with six tusks, embodying the Six Perfections (Paramitas) essential to Buddhist practice. In Tibetan Buddhism, particularly in the Nyingma school, Samantabhadra is revered as the Primordial Buddha, representing the Dharmakaya, the truth body of enlightenment.
