Who is Chenrezig? The Meaning Behind the Statue

Chenrezig, known as Avalokiteshvara in Sanskrit, is one of the most venerated deities in Tibetan Buddhist teachings. He represents limitless compassion and is believed to respond to the cries of the world, offering mercy and healing to those in pain. In Tibetan belief, His Holiness the Dalai Lama is considered a living embodiment of Chenrezig’s compassion.

He is typically portrayed with four arms, two hands held in front of his heart holding a jewel of compassion, and the other two holding a lotus (symbolizing purity) and a mala (prayer beads for spiritual practice). Devotees recite his powerful mantra, “Om Mani Padme Hum,” to cultivate inner peace, cleanse negative karma, and awaken the heart to universal love.
