Mahakala Bernagchen

Mahakala Bernagchen, also known as the Black-Cloaked Mahakala, is a powerful and wrathful protector deity in the Karma Kagyu lineage of Tibetan Buddhism. He is considered a fierce emanation of Avalokiteshvara, the bodhisattva of compassion, who manifests in this terrifying form to eliminate obstacles and protect the Dharma. Bernagchen is typically depicted with a dark, menacing appearance, wearing a black cloak and standing amidst flames that symbolize his ability to burn away ignorance and negativity. He holds a chopper and a skull cup, which represent the cutting of the ego and the transformation of defilements into wisdom. Despite his fearsome look, his essence is deeply compassionate, and his actions are aimed at guiding practitioners toward enlightenment.
