1000 Armed Chenrezig

1000 Armed Chenrezig is a specific form of the Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara. Known for his compassions, each arm of 1000 Armed Chenrezig symbolizes the endless potential of Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara, with each hand representing a way to offer assistance to all the beings who are suffering in this world. Each palm of his hands contains an eye so that he may carefully watch over this world full of suffering.

Being an embodiment of all the infinite Buddha's wisdom, he stands on a moon disc upon a lotus seat. His body emanates a white light, is joyful, and is decorated with exquisite jewel ornaments. Chenrezig, with eleven faces, embodies compassion and wisdom. His faces are layered in symbolic colors: white, green, and red, alternating in arrangement, with a wrathful blue face topped by a peaceful red Amitabha Buddha. His first two hands hold a wish-fulfilling gem at his heart, symbolizing unity. His other hands hold sacred items: a crystal rosary, Dharma wheel, golden lotus, nectar vase, and a bow and arrow, each representing aspects of compassion and enlightenment. The remaining 992 hands offer blessings, while an antelope skin on his left shoulder symbolizes overcoming hatred with compassion.

The golden lotus flower symbolizes wisdom and purity, remaining unstained despite growing in muddy water. Its golden color reflects its precious nature. Chenrezig’s crystal rosary guides beings from Samsara, and his gesture of supreme giving offers ultimate siddhis, with nectar flowing to relieve the suffering of beings in the hungry ghost realm, a focus of his compassion as a manifestation of the Lotus Family.

The empowerment vase’s nectar purifies negativities, karma, and obscurations, while the wheel of knowledge signifies his universal Dharma teachings and mundane siddhis. The bow and arrow symbolize his balance of skillful means and wisdom. Standing on a moon cushion above a lotus, Chenrezig represents renunciation and Bodhichitta, abiding beyond Samsara and Nirvana.

His ornaments and robes highlight his enlightened qualities, with the five-colored silks symbolizing the five wisdoms. A deerskin on his left shoulder, over his heart, reflects unceasing compassion, embodying Thousand-Armed Chenrezig’s love for all sentient beings.

A part of Mahayana Buddhism, Boddhisattva is an entity on a path to enlightenment who selflessly chooses to delay their entry into Nirvana to help others achieve enlightenment. 

The mantra of the revered 1000 Armed Chenrezig is:

Om Mani Padme Hum

This mantra is a widely known universal mantra for compassion in Tibetan Buddhism and is especially tied to Avalokiteshvara and his other forms, including the 1000 Armed Chenrezig. The mantra is recited with deep devotion as it embodies the compassion and wisdom of Avalokiteshvara.

Each syllable carries profound meaning and represents the six realms of existence, guiding beings toward liberation:

Om: Purifies pride and ego.

Ma: Purifies jealousy and lust for entertainment.

Ni: Purifies passion and desire.

Pad: Purifies ignorance and prejudice.

Me: Purifies greed and possessiveness.

Hum: Purifies hatred and aggression.
