Je Tsongkhapa (1357–1419), the great Tibetan Buddhist master and founder of the Gelug school, is revered as one of Tibet's most influential religious philosophers. Known for his iconic yellow hat, he meticulously studied all available Indian Buddhist classics, synthesizing them into a clear path to enlightenment. His teachings became the foundation of the Gelugpa tradition, which flourished as Tibet's dominant school until 1951 and remains guided by its spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama.
Among Tsongkhapa's foremost disciples, Gyaltsab Je stands out as his most renowned student. As the second throne-holder of Gaden Monastery (Tsongkhapa's principal seat), he played a pivotal role in preserving his master's legacy. After Tsongkhapa's passing, Gyaltsab Je became the Gaden Tripa—the supreme head of the Gelug tradition.
Another key disciple, Khedrup Je, was a prolific scholar who composed 58 treatises and essential prayer texts. His works remain central to Tibetan Buddhist practice, particularly his Kalachakra Tantra writings, which serve as the basis for the Dalai Lama's Kalachakra empowerments.
