Virupa
Virupa is a revered figure in Vajrayana Buddhism, known as one of the 84 Mahasiddhas, or great accomplished masters. His story is steeped in mysticism, embodying the transformative power of tantric practice. A former abbot and scholar at the famous Nalanda University, Virupa devoted himself to intense meditation and esoteric practices. His breakthrough came after a profound experience with the deity Vajra Nairatmya, who initiated him into secret teachings, leading to his realization of great spiritual power. Virupa is famously associated with miraculous feats, such as halting the sun’s movement in the sky to extend a day, showcasing his mastery over natural laws. Often depicted with one hand raised in a commanding gesture and the other holding a kapala (skull cup), Virupa embodies both fierce wisdom and compassion, demonstrating the path of overcoming illusion and achieving enlightenment. His legacy continues to inspire practitioners in their pursuit of spiritual liberation and inner strength.
