Maitreya Buddha

Maitreya Buddha, known as the Buddha of the Future, is a revered figure across all major schools of Buddhism. According to Buddhist tradition, Maitreya currently resides in the heavenly realm of Tushita, awaiting the time when the teachings of Shakyamuni Buddha have faded from the world. At that point, he will descend to Earth, attain enlightenment, and once again teach the Dharma to guide beings toward liberation.

The name Maitreya comes from the Sanskrit word maitrī, meaning loving-kindness or friendship, reflecting his role as a compassionate savior. He is often depicted seated in a Western-style posture with his feet on the ground, symbolizing his readiness to rise and act. In art, he may hold a water flask or be adorned with princely ornaments, and in some traditions, he is associated with the “Laughing Buddha” figure, especially in Chinese folklore.
