Samantabhadra

In Buddhist tradition, Samantabhadra Bodhisattva, revered as the embodiment of universal virtue and practice, is often depicted seated upon a majestic white elephant with six tusks, symbolizing the perfection of the six paramitas (virtues) that lead to enlightenment—generosity, morality, patience, diligence, meditation, and wisdom. This image originates from the Avatamsaka Sutra (Flower Garland Sutra), where Samantabhadra is described as the protector of practitioners who dedicate themselves to compassionate action and the pursuit of ultimate truth. The elephant, a creature known for its strength and calm endurance, represents the steady and powerful support needed on the spiritual path, while its multiple tusks signify the overcoming of obstacles and the completeness of Buddhist practice.
