Shakyamuni Buddha and His Disciples

Shakyamuni Buddha with the two principal disciples, Shariputra (Sariputra) and Maudgalyayana (Maudgalyayana), represents the living heart of early Buddhist tradition, where wisdom and compassionate action stand side by side. Shakyamuni Buddha, the historical Buddha, taught the path to liberation through insight, ethical conduct, and meditation, while Shariputra became renowned for unmatched wisdom and deep understanding of the Dharma, and Maudgalyayana for extraordinary meditative powers and compassionate service. An often-told account describes how these two disciples, once spiritual seekers under another teacher, recognized the truth of the Buddha’s teachings after encountering a simple verse on dependent origination, leading them to become the Buddha’s closest students. Together, this sacred triad symbolizes the complete Buddhist path: the Buddha as the awakened teacher, Shariputra as the embodiment of insight, and Maudgalyayana as the embodiment of skillful action, inspiring practitioners to unite wisdom and compassion in daily practice.
