Palden Lhamo

Palden Lhamo, the fierce protector goddess of Tibetan Buddhism, is often depicted riding a mule across a sea of blood, her dark, wrathful form adorned with flaming hair and wielding a skull cup, club, and a bag of diseases, symbolizing her power to destroy obstacles and safeguard the Dharma. She is accompanied by a retinue of attendant dakinis, including Makaravaktra (Makara-Faced Dakini) and Simhavaktra (Lion-Faced Dakini), who embody the transformative energy of enlightened wrath. Makaravaktra, with her monstrous sea-creature visage, cuts through emotional and karmic blockages, while Simhavaktra, roaring with a lion’s ferocity, annihilates ignorance and psychic disturbances. Together, these dakinis assist Palden Lhamo in subduing negativity, protecting practitioners, and ensuring the swift removal of obstacles on the path to enlightenment.
