Four-Armed Mahakala

Four-Armed Mahakala, also known as Chaturbhuja Mahakala, is a powerful wrathful deity and Dharma protector in Vajrayana Buddhism, especially revered in the Marpa Kagyu and Nyingma traditions. He is an emanation of Avalokiteshvara, the Bodhisattva of Compassion, who manifests in this fierce form to destroy obstacles, eliminate negativity, and safeguard the Dharma. When depicted in Yab-Yum union with his consort, Mahakala represents the primordial union of compassion and wisdom, where the male deity embodies skillful means and the female consort embodies insight. His four arms hold symbolic implements such as a sword, a trident, a skull cup, and a lasso, which signify his ability to cut through ignorance, bind harmful forces, and transform delusion into clarity. He is often shown standing or seated atop a corpse, which symbolizes his transcendence over death and impermanence, while his wrathful expression, flaming hair, and ornaments reflect his uncompromising protection and spiritual power.
