Gautama Buddha

Gautama Buddha—also known as Siddhartha Gautama, Shakyamuni Buddha, or simply the Buddha—was a spiritual teacher and founder of Buddhism who lived in ancient India around the 5th to 6th century BCE. Born a prince in the Shakya clan in present-day Nepal, Siddhartha lived a life of luxury until he encountered the realities of aging, illness, and death. These experiences led him to renounce his royal life in search of the ultimate truth behind human suffering.

After years of intense meditation and spiritual practice, he attained enlightenment (Bodhi) under the Bodhi tree in Bodh Gaya. From that moment, he became “The Buddha,” or The Awakened One, who had discovered the path to liberation from the cycle of birth, death, and rebirth (samsara). His core teachings—the Four Noble Truths and the Eightfold Path—offer a practical guide to overcome suffering through mindfulness, ethical conduct, and mental discipline.
