Green Tara

Green Tara, known as Shyamatara in Sanskrit and Drolma in Tibetan, is one of the most beloved female deities in Tibetan Buddhism. She embodies active compassion, always ready to respond swiftly to the suffering of sentient beings. Born from a tear of Avalokiteshvara, the bodhisattva of compassion, she vowed to remain in female form across lifetimes to aid others—a bold spiritual declaration that defied traditional norms. Depicted in a seated posture with her right leg extended, Green Tara symbolizes her readiness to leap into action. Her right hand, in the gesture of giving, offers blessings and protection, while her left hand holds a blue lotus, representing purity and wisdom. Her mantra, Om Tare Tuttare Ture Soha, is widely chanted to remove obstacles, fears, and inner turmoil. Green Tara is also revered for liberating beings from the “Eight Great Fears,” which include both physical dangers and emotional afflictions like pride, ignorance, and attachment.
