Who is the Karmapa? | Significance in Tibetan Buddhism

The Karmapa is the spiritual head of the Karma Kagyu lineage, one of the four major schools of Tibetan Buddhism. Known as the "Black Hat Lama", the Karmapa is regarded as an emanation of Avalokiteshvara (Chenrezig), the bodhisattva of compassion. The title “Karmapa” means “the one who carries out enlightened activity”, and he is considered the first consciously reincarnating lama in Tibetan history, with a line of successive incarnations starting from Düsum Khyenpa in the 12th century.

The Karmapa plays a vital role in preserving and transmitting the teachings of the Kagyu tradition, especially those related to meditation practices, Mahamudra (the Great Seal), and Vajrayana rituals. Revered for his spiritual realization, compassion, and ability to guide disciples toward liberation, the Karmapa is seen as a living embodiment of wisdom and activity. Practitioners pray to the Karmapa for spiritual protection, guidance on the path to enlightenment, and blessings for inner clarity and rebirth in pure realms.
