Hevajra

Hevajra is a powerful and complex deity in Vajrayana Buddhism, especially revered within the Sakya and Kagyu traditions. He is a wrathful manifestation of enlightened wisdom, embodying the union of compassion and insight, two essential forces on the path to enlightenment. Hevajra is typically depicted with eight faces, sixteen arms, and four legs, often in a dynamic dance posture, symbolizing his ability to overcome ignorance and transform negative emotions into spiritual realization. His fierce appearance, adorned with skulls and flames, is not meant to instill fear but to represent the intensity of the inner journey toward awakening.

Hevajra is often shown in yab-yum (father-mother) union with his consort Nairatmya, whose name means “no-self.” This embrace signifies the inseparability of wisdom (prajna) and method (upaya)—a central theme in Tantric practice. Together, they represent the non-dual nature of reality, where opposites dissolve into enlightened awareness.
