Begtse Chen

Begtse Chen, also known as Chamsing (meaning "Great Coat of Mail") and referred to in Sanskrit as Prana Atma, is a powerful Buddhist protector deity revered for his fierce presence and unwavering commitment to defending the Dharma. Often identified as the Red Mahakala, Begtse Chen holds a prominent role in the Sakya tradition's guardian pantheon of Wisdom Deities. Over time, his protective energy was embraced by Tsongkhapa’s Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism, where Begtse Chen became a central worldly protector deity, especially venerated in Mongolia since the 17th century. In the Gelug lineage, Begtse Chen is invoked for spiritual protection, strength, and the removal of obstacles, making him a highly respected figure in both monastic and lay practitioner communities.
