Vajrasattva

Vajrasattva is traditionally honored as the second patriarch in the Shingon Buddhist lineage, following Vairocana Buddha as the first. According to Kukai’s account in the Record of the Dharma Transmission, the great sage Nagarjuna encountered Vajrasattva in a sacred iron tower in southern India—a story passed down through the testimony of Amoghavajra. As described in the Mahavairocana Sutra, Vajrasattva initiated Nagarjuna through the sacred abhiseka empowerment ceremony, entrusting him with the profound esoteric teachings originally received from Vairocana Buddha. While Kukai’s writings do not delve deeply into Vajrasattva’s origins, his role as a transmitter of Vajrayana wisdom underscores his significance as the embodiment of purity and spiritual empowerment in Tibetan and Esoteric Buddhism.
