Vajrasattva

Vajrasattva, revered in Shingon Buddhism, is traditionally recognized as the second patriarch, following Vairocana Buddha. According to Kukai's writings in the Record of the Dharma Transmission, the Buddhist master Nagarjuna is said to have encountered Vajrasattva in an iron tower in southern India, a story based on Amoghavajra's testimony. As described in the Mahavairocana Sutra, Vajrasattva initiated Nagarjuna into the abhiseka ceremony and entrusted him with esoteric teachings directly received from Vairocana Buddha. Although Kukai does not elaborate on Vajrasattva's origins, his role as a divine purifier and wisdom deity remains essential in Tibetan and Esoteric Buddhism.
