Shakyamuni Buddha

Shakyamuni Buddha, also known as Siddhartha Gautama, is the historical founder of Buddhism and is revered as the Enlightened One who discovered the path to liberation from suffering. Born as a prince in Lumbini (present-day Nepal) around the 6th century BCE, he renounced his royal life in search of truth and spiritual awakening. After years of deep meditation and self-discipline, he attained enlightenment under the Bodhi tree in Bodh Gaya, India, becoming the Buddha—“the awakened one.”

Shakyamuni Buddha’s teachings, known as the Dharma, form the foundation of all Buddhist traditions. He taught the Four Noble Truths and the Eightfold Path, guiding beings toward compassion, mindfulness, wisdom, and inner peace. Depicted in statues seated in meditation posture with a begging bowl, Shakyamuni represents simplicity, detachment, and the monastic ideal.
