About Serkyem

The Serkyem Offering, deeply rooted in Tibetan Buddhist tradition, is a ritual practice used to honor Dharma protectors—particularly deities like Palden Lhamo and Mahakala. Originating from ancient monastic customs, "Serkyem" translates to “golden drink,” symbolizing the offering of precious liquids such as tea, alcohol, or milk in a two-piece vessel—often made of brass or copper. The upper bowl overflows into the lower, representing abundance and the devotee’s willingness to give without hesitation. Legend tells of a great Tibetan master who, during a perilous journey through the Himalayas, offered his only tea in a Serkyem to Mahakala for protection—and miraculously, a storm cleared, guiding him safely to his monastery. This practice endures as a powerful gesture of devotion and gratitude in both personal and monastic rituals.
