Shakyamuni Buddha

Shakyamuni Buddha, originally named Siddhartha Gautama, is the historical founder of Buddhism and is honored as the awakened teacher who revealed the path to liberation. He was born into the Shakya clan in present-day Nepal and lived as a prince surrounded by luxury until he encountered the realities of aging, illness, and death. These experiences led him to renounce his royal life and seek spiritual truth. After years of meditation and ascetic practice, he attained enlightenment beneath the Bodhi tree in Bodh Gaya and became known as the Buddha, meaning the one who has awakened. He spent the remainder of his life teaching the Dharma, a path of ethical conduct, mental discipline, and insight that leads to freedom from suffering.
