Palden Lhamo

Palden Lhamo, known as the Glorious Goddess, is the principal female Dharma protector in Tibetan Buddhism and the only female among the Eight Guardians of the Law. She is revered especially within the Gelug school and is considered the personal protector of the Dalai Lama lineage. According to legend, she was once married to a demon king in Lanka and, after failing to convert him to Buddhism, she killed their son, who was destined to destroy the Dharma. She then fled on a mule, which was struck by an arrow, and transformed the wound into a mystical eye to watch over the twenty-four regions. Because of her fierce commitment to protecting the Dharma, she was empowered by Vajradhara and Yama to become a wrathful dharmapala.
