Vajrasattva

Vajrasattva, whose name means “Diamond Being” or “Thunderbolt Being,” is a central figure in Mahayana and Vajrayana Buddhism, revered for his power to purify negative karma and mental obscurations. He is often depicted as a radiant white deity seated in a meditative posture, holding a vajra (symbol of indestructible truth) in his right hand and a bell (symbol of wisdom) in his left. This serene yet powerful image represents the union of method and wisdom, core principles in Buddhist practice.

In Tibetan Buddhism, Vajrasattva is especially important in Ngöndro, the preliminary practices that prepare a practitioner for deeper tantric teachings. His Hundred-Syllable Mantra is recited to cleanse the mindstream of past harmful actions and broken spiritual commitments (samaya). The mantra is believed to invoke Vajrasattva’s compassionate presence, allowing practitioners to release guilt, regret, and spiritual blockages.
