Six-Armed Mahakala

Six-Armed Mahakala, also known as Shadbhuja Mahakala, is a wrathful Dharmapala and a fierce emanation of Avalokiteshvara, the Bodhisattva of Compassion, who took this form to protect the Buddhist Dharma and subdue negative forces during times of spiritual decline. He is especially revered in the Shangpa Kagyu and Gelugpa traditions, where he is considered the swift-acting lord of pristine awareness. His midnight blue body symbolizes the changeless Dharmakaya, and his three eyes represent his awareness of the past, present, and future, as well as the three bodies of the Buddha. The six arms of Mahakala hold sacred implements such as a curved knife, a skull cup, a rosary, a damaru drum, a trident, and a lasso, each symbolizing his mastery over the six perfections, which are generosity, ethics, patience, diligence, concentration, and wisdom.
