Je Tsongkhapa with Its Disciple
Je Tsongkhapa, the revered founder of the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism, is often depicted alongside his two foremost disciples, Gyaltsab Je and Khedrup Je, forming a sacred triad that symbolizes the unbroken transmission of wisdom and realization. Born in 1357, Tsongkhapa was a brilliant scholar, meditator, and reformer who emphasized the integration of profound philosophical insight with deep meditative practice. His teachings revitalized monastic discipline and clarified the path of sutra and tantra, earning him recognition as an emanation of the Bodhisattva Manjushri.
Gyaltsab Je, known for his sharp intellect and deep devotion, succeeded Tsongkhapa as the second abbot of Ganden Monastery. He played a key role in preserving and spreading his teacher’s legacy. Khedrup Je, later recognized as the 1st Panchen Lama, was a prolific writer and tantric master who authored numerous commentaries and helped shape the Gelug tradition’s tantric curriculum. Both disciples are considered emanations of enlightened beings and were instrumental in mentoring the First Dalai Lama.
