3rd Karmapa

The 3rd Karmapa, Rangjung Dorje (1284–1339), stands as one of the most influential spiritual masters in the lineage of the Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhism. Revered for his profound scholarship, meditation mastery, and visionary teachings, he played a vital role in shaping the philosophical and ritual foundations of the Kagyu tradition. The Karmapa is traditionally regarded as an emanation of Avalokiteshvara, embodying boundless compassion and enlightened activity for the benefit of all beings. The title “Karmapa” originates from the Sanskrit word karma, meaning action or enlightened activity, reflecting the Karmapa’s role in actively guiding disciples and preserving the Buddha’s teachings.
