Manjushri

In Mahāyāna Buddhism, Manjushri is a bodhisattva representing prajñā or transcendent wisdom. The term is derived from the combination of the Sanskrit long "manju" and the appended honorific "śrī" it can be paraphrased as, "Beautiful One with Glory" or "Beautiful One with Auspiciousness." Manjushri is also known by the longer name Manjushrikumarabhuta, which has the meanings "Manjushri, Still a Youth," or "Prince Manjushri." Another much-used name for Manjushri is Manjughosa, implying his noble and wise disposition. In Vajrayana Buddhism, Manjushri is viewed as a meditative deity, completely enlightened as a Buddha. In Shingon, he stands alongside the other Thirteen Buddhas to whom a disciple bows. Manjushri is found in many esoteric texts, such as the Manjushrimulakalpa, and others. It is told in some traditions that he is consort with Saraswati, a goddess whom one sees as wisdom or learning together with his enlightened presence.
