Chenrezig

Chenrezig, known as Avalokiteśvara in Sanskrit, is the bodhisattva who embodies the compassion of all Buddhas, deeply revered across the Himalayan and East Asian Buddhist traditions. In Tibetan Buddhism, he is portrayed with multiple arms and eyes—symbols of his boundless ability to perceive and alleviate the suffering of sentient beings. His mantra, Om Mani Padme Hum, is chanted by devotees to cultivate compassion and inner peace, with the belief that it purifies negative karma and awakens one’s spiritual potential. Chenrezig is also recognized culturally: in Tibet, the Dalai Lamas are considered his earthly incarnations; in Nepal and India, his presence graces temples as Avalokiteśvara or Padmapani; and in East Asia, he transforms into the female figure Guanyin.
