Thousand-Armed Avalokiteśvara

Thousand-Armed Avalokiteśvara, also known as Sahasrabhuja Avalokiteśvara, is one of the most awe-inspiring manifestations of the Bodhisattva of Compassion. This form symbolizes Avalokiteśvara’s boundless ability to perceive suffering and respond to it with skillful means. According to legend, Avalokiteśvara vowed never to rest until all sentient beings were liberated from suffering. When he saw the vastness of suffering in the world, his body shattered from the strain of his compassion. Amitābha Buddha then miraculously restored him with eleven heads to hear the cries of beings in all directions and one thousand arms, each with an eye in the palm, to reach out and help.
