Kshitigarbha

Ksitigarbha (Sanskrit: क्षितिगर्भ, "Earth Treasury") is a revered Bodhisattva in Mahayana Buddhism, known for his vow to aid all beings in samsara, particularly those suffering in hell realms, until every being attains enlightenment. He is often depicted as a monk holding a staff (khakkhara) to open the gates of hell and a wish-fulfilling jewel (cintamani) to dispel darkness and grant blessings. Originating in Indian Buddhist texts, Kshitigarbha's veneration spread widely in East Asia, particularly in China, Japan, and Korea, where he is known as Dizang, Jizō, and Jijang, respectively. His compassionate role as a protector of children, travelers, and the deceased, alongside his emphasis on selfless service and perseverance, resonates deeply with devotees, embodying the Buddhist ideals of boundless compassion and relentless effort.
