Amitabha Buddha

Amitabha Buddha, whose name means “Infinite Light,” is one of the most revered figures in Mahayana Buddhism, especially within the Pure Land tradition. He is known for his boundless compassion and his vow to lead all beings to enlightenment. According to the Sukhāvatīvyūha Sūtras, Amitabha was once a bodhisattva named Dharmākara who made 48 profound vows. The most famous of these promises is that anyone who sincerely calls upon his name with faith will be reborn in his Pure Land, Sukhāvatī, a realm of bliss, free from suffering, where enlightenment is easily attainable.

Amitabha is often depicted seated in meditation posture, radiating a serene and compassionate presence. His red hue symbolizes love and spiritual warmth, and he is sometimes shown holding a begging bowl, representing renunciation and the nurturing of all beings. In Tibetan Buddhism, he is also one of the five Dhyani Buddhas, associated with the western direction and the element of fire.
