Medicine Buddha Iconography

The iconography of the Medicine Buddha, or Bhaisajyaguru, is imbued with rich symbolism that conveys his healing powers and compassionate nature. He is typically depicted with blue skin, representing the healing properties of lapis lazuli and symbolizing the vastness of the sky and the boundless wisdom of the Buddha. The Medicine Buddha is often shown seated in a meditative posture, known as the vajra posture, with both legs crossed, signifying stability and deep meditation. His right hand is usually depicted in the gesture of granting blessings (varada mudra), symbolizing his readiness to bestow healing and assistance. In his left hand, he holds a medicine bowl or jar filled with nectar, which represents the elixir of immortality and his ability to cure physical and spiritual ailments. The presence of the lotus flower and the healing stick (or plant) further emphasize his role as a provider of relief and health.
