Ksitigarbha

After the passing of Shakyamuni or Gautama Buddha, the Ksitigarbha or the Earth Store Bodhisattva vowed to rescue and shelter every living being from the six worlds of existence until the arrival of Metteya Buddha. With a heart full of compassion and a desire for the salvation of others, he vowed not to be enlightened until all souls doomed in hell (Naraka) were free. Revered as the Earth Bodhisattva, Ksitigarbha is ideally the protector of wandering spirits, dead children, aborted fetuses, travelers, and all beings in search of sanctuary. His very presence symbolizes protection, guidance, and the alleviation of suffering; hence he is greatly honored in both Mahayana and Vajrayana paths.

Ksitigarbha, or Jizo in Japan and Dizang in China, is one of the most revered Bodhisattvas in all Mahayana Buddhism. Known as Earth Treasury Bodhisattva, he is acclaimed to demonstrate infinite compassion and an eternally deep vow to bring relief from the suffering of all sentient beings within the six realms of samsara and hells. "Earth Womb," or "Earth Matrix," refers to his name as meaning synchronous earth-earth and what could be his role as protector and guide.
