About Machig Labdron

Machig Labdrom was an extraordinary 11th-century Tibetan yogini who founded the Chöd tradition, a unique spiritual practice that focuses on cutting through ego and attachment. Born in Tibet in 1055, she was recognized as a reincarnation of Yeshe Tsogyal and showed remarkable spiritual insight from a young age. Her teachings combined the Prajnaparamita philosophy with tantric methods, creating a path that emphasized facing inner fears and transforming them into wisdom. Unlike many Buddhist masters of her time who were male and Indian, Machig was both female and Tibetan, which made her lineage especially significant. She lived as a wandering practitioner, often among outcasts, and taught that demons and obstacles are projections of the mind. Her legacy continues through the Chöd lineage, which remains a vital part of Tibetan Buddhist practice today.
