Mahakala Bernagchen

Mahakala Bernagchen, known as the “Black Cloak Mahakala,” is a wrathful protector deity in Tibetan Buddhism, especially revered within the Karma Kagyu lineage. Introduced into the tradition by the 2nd Karmapa, Karma Pakshi, Bernagchen is considered the personal guardian of the Karmapas and a fierce embodiment of compassion and protection. He is depicted with a dark, fearsome appearance—black or deep blue skin, three eyes symbolizing omniscient awareness, flaming hair, and a crown of skulls representing the transformation of negative emotions into wisdom. His right hand holds a flaying knife to cut through ego and ignorance, while his left cradles a skull cup filled with wisdom nectar. Bernagchen’s black cloak symbolizes his power to absorb and dispel all negativities, and his wrathful form is not malevolent but a skillful means to eliminate obstacles on the spiritual path.
