Marichi

Marichi is a fascinating figure who appears in both Hindu and Buddhist traditions, though with very different identities and roles. In Hindu mythology, Marichi is one of the Saptarishi, the seven great sages, and is considered a mind-born son of Brahma, the creator god. He is revered for his wisdom and spiritual insight and is the father of Kashyapa, who in turn is the progenitor of many beings, including devas and asuras.

In Buddhism, Marichi transforms into a powerful goddess of light and protection, often called the Goddess of the Dawn. Her name means “ray of light,” and she is associated with the sun’s radiance and the removal of darkness and obstacles. She is depicted in various forms, sometimes peaceful, sometimes wrathful, with multiple arms and faces, and often rides a chariot pulled by seven boars or pigs.
