Mitrugpa Buddha, also known as Aksobhya in Sanskrit and Mi ’khrugs pa in Tibetan, is one of the Five Dhyani Buddhas in Mahayana and Vajrayana Buddhism, revered as the embodiment of unshakable resolve and mirror-like wisdom. Originating from early Mahayana texts and further emphasized in tantric teachings, Mitrugpa resides in the eastern Pure Land of Abhirati and is invoked to purify negative karma, especially those caused by anger and hatred. Devotees believe that sincerely reciting his mantra and visualizing his form can help avert untimely death and lead to rebirth in his pure land. A popular story tells of a wrathful king who was taught the Mitrugpa practice by a wandering yogi; through intense devotion and repentance, the king not only found peace but also transformed into a protector of the Dharma. Mitrugpa’s iconography, often shown touching the earth with his right hand, symbolizes his vow to remain unshaken even in the face of challenges, offering devotees a powerful model of inner stability and fearlessness.
