Chenrezig

Chenrezig, known in Sanskrit as Avalokiteśvara, is the Bodhisattva of Compassion and one of the most beloved figures in Tibetan Buddhism. He embodies the infinite mercy of all Buddhas and is considered the patron deity of Tibet. His name, Chenrezig, translates to “One Who Looks with Unwavering Eye,” symbolizing his constant watchfulness over sentient beings and his vow to alleviate their suffering.

According to legend, Chenrezig vowed not to rest until he had liberated all beings from samsara. When he saw the vast number still trapped in suffering, his body was shattered in despair. Amitābha Buddha then restored him with eleven heads and a thousand arms, each hand bearing an eye to see suffering and offer help. This iconic form represents his boundless ability to respond to the needs of all beings simultaneously.
