Chenrezig

Chenrezig, known in Sanskrit as Avalokitesvara, is the Bodhisattva of Compassion one of the most revered figures in Mahayana and Vajrayana Buddhism. In Tibetan Buddhism, Chenrezig is considered the patron deity of Tibet and is believed to embody the compassion of all Buddhas. According to legend, Chenrezig made a powerful vow: he would not rest until he had liberated all sentient beings from suffering. When he saw the vastness of suffering still present in the world, his body shattered from despair.

Chenrezig is often depicted in a four-armed form: two hands joined at the heart holding a wish-fulfilling jewel, symbolizing his compassionate intention; the other two hold a lotus flower and a crystal mala (prayer beads), representing purity and the continuous cycle of compassionate action.

His mantra, Om Mani Padme Hum, is perhaps the most widely recited in Tibetan Buddhism. It’s believed to invoke his blessings and awaken the compassion within the reciter. Each syllable is said to purify one of the six realms of existence, guiding beings toward enlightenment.
