About Kapala Cup

The Kapala, meaning "skull" in Sanskrit, is a revered ritual item in Tibetan Buddhism and Hindu Tantra, historically crafted from a human skull and used in esoteric practices to symbolize the impermanence of life and the transformation of delusions into wisdom. Originating in ancient India and deeply into Tibetan Vajrayana rituals, it became a powerful vessel for wrathful deity offerings, particularly in Chöd practice, where practitioners visualize offering their ego to cut through attachment. Legend speaks of Machig Labdrön, the great female yogini who developed Chöd, using the Kapala to make visionary offerings to fierce deities, dissolving fear and ego through compassion. Today, modern Kapalas are ethically crafted from metal, often adorned with precious materials, continuing to serve as a sacred bridge between practitioner and deity, anchoring devotion in ritual depth and ancestral wisdom.
