Santaraksita

Santaraksita, revered as the great abbot and philosopher, stands as one of the most pivotal figures in the establishment of Buddhism in Tibet. Known as the “Protector of the Essence,” Santaraksita was a renowned Indian scholar-monk from Nalanda University, whose wisdom and insight laid the foundation for the synthesis of philosophy and monastic discipline within Tibetan Buddhism. Invited to Tibet by King Trisong Detsen, Santaraksita played a vital role in introducing monastic ordination and establishing the first Buddhist monastery at Samye. His profound teachings unified Madhyamaka philosophy with Yogacara thought, harmonizing reasoning and meditation into a balanced path toward enlightenment. Through his guidance, the seeds of the Dharma took deep root in Tibet.
