Palden Lhamo

Palden Lhamo, also known as Shri Devi in Sanskrit, is the only female among the Eight Guardians of the Dharma in Tibetan Buddhism and serves as the principal protectress of Tibet. A wrathful emanation of Tara and Sarasvati, she embodies fierce compassion and unwavering protection of the Buddhist teachings. Her terrifying iconography—riding a white mule across a sea of blood, wielding a skull cup filled with blood, and adorned with a crown of skulls—symbolizes her power to annihilate ignorance and spiritual obstacles. According to legend, she killed her own son to prevent the destruction of Buddhism, flayed his skin for a saddle, and transformed the wound from her husband’s arrow into an all-seeing eye on her mule’s rump.
