It commemorates their historic 8th-century collaboration that established Tibet’s first monastery and monastic tradition. Shared Legacy of Trisong Detsen and Shantarakshita

Shantarakshita and Trisong Detsen share a deeply interwoven legacy at the very foundation of Tibetan Buddhism. In the 8th century, King Trisong Detsen invited the great Indian scholar Shantarakshita from Nālandā University to Tibet to establish the Dharma in a lasting and structured form. Together, they laid the groundwork for the first Buddhist monastery at Samye, where Shantarakshita introduced the Madhyamaka philosophical tradition and ordained the first Tibetan monks, while Trisong Detsen provided unwavering royal patronage and support for the translation of sacred texts. Their collaboration united spiritual authority and enlightened leadership, ensuring the establishment, preservation, and flourishing of Buddhist teachings across Tibet for generations.
