Vajrasattva

Vajrasattva is revered in Shingon Buddhism as the second patriarch in the esoteric lineage, following Vairocana Buddha. According to Kukai's Record of the Dharma Transmission, based on the testimony of Amoghavajra, the great Indian master Nagarjuna is said to have encountered Vajrasattva in a sacred iron tower in southern India. It was there that Vajrasattva initiated Nagarjuna through the profound abhiseka ceremony and entrusted him with the secret esoteric teachings received from Vairocana Buddha, as recounted in the Mahavairocana Sutra. While Kukai does not elaborate extensively on Vajrasattva’s origins, his role as the transmitter of Vajrayana wisdom underscores his vital significance in the tantric Buddhist tradition.
