Virupa

Virupa, also known as the "Ugly One" or "Mahasiddha Virupa," is a revered tantric master and deity in Tibetan Buddhism, particularly associated with the Sakya tradition. Though historically a human siddha, he is venerated as a wrathful emanation of enlightened wisdom who shattered conventional norms to reveal profound truths. Often portrayed with a fierce expression, a potbelly, and a gesture halting the sun, symbolizing his miraculous control over time, Virupa embodies the power of realization that transcends worldly limitations. His teachings, especially the Lamdré (Path and Result) system, emphasize the direct experience of non-dual awareness and the transformation of desire into the path of liberation. Virupa’s iconography and legends serve as potent reminders that enlightenment can arise in the most unexpected forms.
