Palden Lhamo
Palden Lhamo is a wrathful deity in Tibetan Buddhism, known as the fierce protector of the Dharma and the only female among the group of Dharma Protectors known as the “Eight Guardians.” She is often depicted riding a mule or horse, symbolizing her swift ability to cross between realms and safeguard the teachings of the Buddha. As the personal protector of the Dalai Lamas and the Tibetan government, Palden Lhamo’s role in Buddhist cosmology is deeply significant. Legend tells that she vowed to protect the Dharma after converting from her previous demonic form, making her a fierce symbol of transformation and protection. She is typically shown with a fiery backdrop, symbolizing her wrathful energy to dispel obstacles, while her adornments, such as skulls and bone ornaments, reflect her mastery over samsara.
