The 16th Karmapa, known for his wisdom, joy, and compassion, was venerated throughout the Himalayas and consulted by master's from different lineages. One notable accomplishment was the revival of the Shamarpas lineage, Tibetan Buddhism's second-oldest reincarnate lineage, after it had been forbidden for 170 years. With the 14th Dalai Lama's assent, the 16th Karmapa legally acknowledged and enthroned his nephew, Mipham Chokyi Lodro, as Shamar Rinpoche. Thaye Dorje, His Holiness the 17th Gyalwa Karmapa, is the 16th Karmapa's reincarnation, and his legacy lives on.
